Our Mission

Building Baja is dedicated to transforming lives by constructing safe, stable homes for families in need near Tijuana, Mexico. These families often endure harsh living conditions, surviving in makeshift shelters built from discarded materials, with little protection from weather and hazards. By providing secure and reliable housing, we significantly enhance their quality of life, offering comfort, safety, and dignity.

What We Do

Our organization began as a high school initiative aimed at bridging the gap between our community in La Jolla, California, and our neighbors just across the border. Despite being only an hour apart geographically, the difference in living conditions is profound. At Building Baja, we strive not only to alleviate these disparities but also to educate and inspire students, fostering empathy and awareness among the next generation of community leaders.

We deeply believe in the power of direct action and personal involvement. Our trips offer students hands-on opportunities to make a tangible impact, opening their eyes to global challenges and empowering them to be catalysts for positive change.

Meet The Founder

Austin Hill, currently a junior at The Bishop’s School in La Jolla, California, founded Building Baja, inspired by his experiences with Project Mercy Baja. Beginning his journey during his freshman year, Austin was profoundly moved by the difference secure housing can make in people's lives. Driven to share this meaningful experience, he established Building Baja to allow fellow students the chance to participate directly in transformative community service, creating lasting connections and unforgettable memories.
